CHAPTER TEN

TO KELSEA’S DELIGHT, they hadn’t missed the sunset while they ate dinner. The golden light of dusk reflected off the pastel colors of the wooden buildings. A romantic glow sparked something romantic in her, and she glanced at Will. They could be so much more than business acquaintances...

“I see what you’re doing,” Will interrupted her thoughts and directed them toward the sidewalk that led away from the carriage house restaurant and toward downtown.

Her heart raced as she feared he was about to address her lack of professionalism. “What am I doing?”

“Distracting me so I don’t come up with a myriad of reasons to turn down EverWind’s offer.” Will tugged at his bolo tie.

The racing rhythm of her heart slowed to normal. “Uh-uh. We have fifty-nine minutes left on our business-free outing.”

She strolled alongside him, allowing the contentment of a good meal and good company to take hold. Settling for that would have to be enough. The charm of the buildings with their purple, turquoise and pale yellow facades captivated her. So did the bustle of the visitors and locals. Even this late in the evening, the town was quite crowded. The window displays on Main Street caught her eye, and Will indulged her every time she stopped and stared at the unique offerings.

A group of teens, wearing flip-flops and shorts and laughing, entered Rocky Road Chocolatiers. A delicious aroma of sugar wafted Kelsea’s way. Her mouth watered, but her full stomach rebelled against any more food. Everything about this night was charming.

“Violet Ridge is beautiful,” she said. “What makes the town special for you?”

He was silent as he contemplated her question. Deliberative, he wouldn’t rush anything. Instead, he mulled decisions like the fine glass of cabernet they’d savored with the filet. The dark stubble gracing his chin gave him a slightly mysterious aura that sent those butterflies soaring.

“I’ve traveled to other towns and states for the rodeo.” He stopped to examine the display window for Corwin and Company Boots. Like the other facades, the purple storefront, pretty and bright, caught her attention. It had already closed for the evening, or she’d have entered and examined the fine quality leather boots. “Colorado’s a part of me, same as the Silver Horseshoe was a part of my grandparents and parents. I never considered moving or leaving permanently, even when I was having fun with Sabrina and Lucky.”

“I love traveling. There’s always a new adventure around the bend.”

What would it be like to be that attached to the place you lived? And for it to be a part of you no matter where you ventured? She hadn’t found that.

Yet.

A couple with a golden retriever neared them. The dog veered toward Will, who obliged with a friendly scratch behind the ear. If anything, that endeared him to her even more. The owners waved goodbye and headed in the opposite direction.

“Linus and Violet Irwin hit on something good when they organized the town. There’s something for everyone here.”

“The town’s named after Violet?”

“Rumor has it Linus would do anything for his wife.
